Our current bus, the third one we’ve run, was bought new in early 2010. It is based on a Mercedes Sprinter Euro 5 chassis with a custom body built by Mellors of Rochdale. The long rear extension compared with a standard model makes for a total length of almost seven metres and gives ample space for 16 passenger seats plus dedicated luggage area.
The bus has large windows and a roof-mounted ventilator panel which provide good visibility and light. It has automatic transmission, which is much easier for the driver than the previous vehicle which had a manual gearbox. This latest bus also benefits from improved heating and ventilation systems, which make for a more pleasant journey for both passengers and driver. Aircon in the summer months is a boom if the bus has been parked in the sun while waiting for a return journey.
A low level electric side step at the entrance can be extended from under the bus to aid those who are less agile. The seats are semi-high back with fabric covering for greater comfort and seat belts are fitted throughout. Double doors at the rear allow loading of larger items, but unfortunately is not wheelchair enabled. A Mobitec display board show the route number and destination.
As well as an annual MOT, the bus has a scheduled safety inspection every ten weeks. We are fortunate in being able to have this carried out locally by Arlesey Car and Commercial.
